The Society Hotel: Art Installation

In partnership with creative director Peter Yue, I was selected for a commission of revitalization. During its 2020 COVID-19 closure, the Society Hotel in Portland's Chinatown underwent an environmental beautification and transformation. The project aimed to connect the hotel's modern suites with the neighborhood's rich history.

Artists, including many of color, contributed pieces reflecting the area's diverse past, from its days housing African American workers to its association with Chinese Portlanders and punk rock venues like The Satyricon. The overall vision was to present history in a contemporary and engaging way, offering guests a visual history to discover.

Insight: The art in room 413 is a photo-montage abstract expression of a personal Portland migratory story, a place, and an idea that draws people from distant locations around the world. On the panels, I share an intimate detail of a 6,400-mile north-to-south road trip, a quiet moment of reflection on the migratory nature of Portland's inhabitants.
